Telegram is a free messaging app for phone, desktop, and browser, similar to WhatsApp or iMessage but built around large groups and channels.
Its bigger draw for builders is BotFather, a chat-based tool built into Telegram for creating bots through its Bot API. Anyone can register a bot in a few messages and get a token that lets a program send and receive messages through it, which is why Telegram has become a common front end for chatting with AI agents.
In Episode 003, Ian Kilpatrick used Telegram as the control channel for a fresh OpenClaw agent. He walked through BotFather to register a new bot in a few messages, wired it to the agent, and from there could message the agent directly from his phone to assign it tasks. No dashboard, no separate app to check, just a chat thread.
We keep Telegram in the stack because it turns an agent into something you actually check. Everyone already has a messaging app open all day, so putting your agent there means you catch what it's doing and can redirect it in real time. Ian calls it his favorite channel because BotFather is the easiest setup we've used: no approval wait, no developer account, just a conversation with a bot that hands you a token. If you want to control an agent from your phone without opening a browser, this is a quick way to do it.
